Why it matters
Word of mouth only reaches people who already know someone who knows you. Local search reaches the person who needs you tonight and has never heard your name. Showing up in the map pack is the difference between being found and being missed.
The map pack is also where the trust sits. A profile with recent reviews, current hours and photos of real jobs reads as a going concern. A half-filled listing with no photos reads as a business that might not answer the phone, and people scroll past it.

What changes day to day
Most of the work is unglamorous and largely one-off: the profile filled out properly, the same business name, address and phone showing up everywhere, service and suburb pages that name the places you actually work, and the behind-the-scenes markup that tells Google what you do. After that it is upkeep. New photos, answered reviews, hours kept honest over the holidays.

- Local ranking moves over weeks, not days. Judge it after a couple of months, not a fortnight.
- Your name, address and phone must match everywhere. Old listings carrying a dead number quietly hold you back.
- Never buy reviews. Google is good at spotting them, and the penalty is worse than the gap you were trying to close.
