It can be, if you choose the tool carefully and set it up properly. Health information is covered by the Health Information Privacy Code 2020, which includes rule 12 on sending health information outside New Zealand. Before rollout we check where the scribe stores data, how long it keeps it and whether it trains on it. The clinician still checks every note.
For dental practitioners the Dental Council says yes: before using AI in patient care, explain what it will be used for and get consent. Other boards may have their own guidance, so check yours. We treat telling patients and asking for consent as good practice for every clinic.
Rule 3A of the Health Information Privacy Code started. When you collect health information about a patient from someone else, such as a GP referral, you have to take reasonable steps to make sure the patient knows. Our IPP3A guide explains it, including what it means for AI tools.
